Who we are
Founded by Dutch entrepreneurs who built careers in one of Europe's most competitive housing markets, Pontifex brings rigorous expertise and a long-term perspective to Portugal's Margem Sul.
We work closely with municipalities, lenders and local partners to deliver what the region genuinely needs: well-built, well-designed homes that people on ordinary incomes can afford to buy or rent.
Housing is not a luxury good. It is the foundation of a functioning society. We build for you — from the working public to young couples and families, people who deserve a good home, close to the city, at a price that makes sense.
Our story
Pontifex was founded by brothers Alexander and Sebastiaan Tan. The name is Latin for "bridge builder" — fitting for a company that connects communities with the homes they need.
Alexander spent years developing and managing residential property in Amsterdam; Sebastiaan built and led companies as an entrepreneur. They watched a city price out the very people who keep it running — and set out to do the opposite here. They've lived on the Margem Sul for six years now: not outsiders passing through, but neighbours who know the region, its people and its potential.
Today Alexander leads acquisitions, development and construction; Sebastiaan leads partnerships and strategy. Every project is held to one standard — the home they'd want for their own family.
For the environment, for communities, and with the governance and transparency that good development demands. We are pursuing B Corp certification — because the standards we're held to should match the standards we set ourselves.
We restore and reuse what's there — keeping embodied carbon out of landfill and character in the streetscape. The greenest building is often the one that already exists.
